Draft Settings in AutoCAD (Snap and Grid)

snap and grid in AutoCAD.
Snap: It is AutoCAD tool help you to reach specific point or location with accuracy and easily when you want to pick any point. With help of this you can easily jump from one point to another equal point and draw angular lines.
Grid: Grid is the continuous array of rectangular area on AutoCAD GUI which helps you to give a general idea about the drawn objects.

You can control snap and grid setting in drafting settings Dialog box. To enter in drafting settings dialog box you need DS enter. There are following points are displayed in the drafting setting dialog box:
  1.    Snap On dialog box
You can turn Snap mode on or off by clicking Snap Mode on the status bar, by pressing F9, or by      using the SNAPMODE system variable.
  1.   Snap Spacing
Control on a non- visible, rectangular grid of snap location that restrict pointer movement to specific X and Y interval.
  • Snap X Spacing tab
Specify the snap gaping along X direction. The value must be a non-negative real number.
  • Snap Y Spacing tab
Specify the snap gaping along Y direction. The value must be a non-negative real number.
  • Equal X and Y Spacing tab
To makes the X and Y spacing with same value snapping and grid snapping. The intervals in snap spacing and grid snapping may be different.

Set the snap increasing distance when Polar-Snap is selected.

  1. Snap Type snap
To set the snap style and snap type
  • Grid Snap tab
Set the snap type to Grid snap. During specify points, the cursor start snapping in the direction of vertical or horizontal grid points.
AutoCAD Command: SNAPTYPE
  • Rectangular Snap tab
Setting up of snap style to rectangular snapping mode. On click active mode on rectangular snap tab, the cursor starts snapping to rectangular snaps grid.
AutoCAD Command: SNAPSTYL
  • Isometric Snap tab
Setting up of snap style to isometric snapping mode. On click active mode on rectangular snap box the cursor starts snapping to isometric snaps grid.

  • Polar Snap
Setting of the snapping type to Polar mode. On click active mode on rectangular snap box, the cursor starts snapping in the direction of polar angles.

  1. Grid On dialog box
To activate grid on you need to tick on grid on dialog box or clicking on grid on icon on status bar. You can also activate grid on by pressing F7 button on keyboard.

Set the grid style in 2D contexts. You can also set grid style by using the GRIDSTYLE system variable.

Setting of grid style to dotted grid style for 2D model space.

To control the display of a grid to visualize distances.
  • Grid X Spacing tab
Specify the grid space direction of X.

Specify the grid space direction of Y

  • Major Line Every tab
To specify the amount of major grid lines to minor grid.

  • Grid Behavior
  • In AutoCAD: [GRIDSTYLE] is set to 0.
  • In AutoCAD LT: SHADEMODE is set to Hidden.
Control the appearance of the grid lines.
Adaptive Grid tab
Limiting density of the grid spacing when zoomed out.

Allow Subdivision below Grid Spacing tab:
Generate additional, more closely spaced grid lines when zoomed in.

To displaying the grid beyond the area already specified by the LIMITS command.

To changing the grid plane to follow the XY plane of the dynamic UCS.
